Juliette & The Licks: Four On The Floor

The first time I heard Juliette Lewis sing was when she covered two PJ Harvey songs in the sci-fi film Strange Days. I bought the soundtrack just for her desperate and torchy rendition of "Hardly Wait". With The Licks, Juliette ditches the solo femme fatale act in favour of a growling rockstar stance. Though Four On The Floor has a slightly smoother flow than the band's previous releases, it's more of a sharpening than a softening. The guitars quake and grind, while the drums thump your gut. The grooves are tighter, louder, and catchier. Lewis screams and wails like an electrified banshee just as well as she whispers verses in the seductive purr of a dangerous siren. Juliette's raw vocals are stronger than ever, and the band's overall sound shines with a new polish.

The album rips open with "Smash and Grab" and "Hot Kiss", and the band doesn't stop tearing it up until the end. "Sticky Honey" brushes the rowdy rock with the lightest hint of pop, and "Get Up" has just a faint hint of blues in Juliette's soulful howl. Lewis wraps swaggering and venomous spoken word verses with seraphic crooning in "Death Of A Whore". The finale "Are You Happy" is the only quiet moment on the disc.
