Romi Mayes creates what has been described as "country bourbon bluegrass soul" music. Some of the songs on Sweet Somethin' Steady call to mind the outlaw years of country when Johnny Cash and company were spinning their darkly honest yarns. Even the gentler tracks on the disc are grounded by the integrity of Romi's voice. Mayes has played with Ricky Skaggs, Martha Wainwright, Fed Eaglesmith, and Pieta Brown among others.

The album opens with the dramatic road song "Eight More Days", which mixes intermittent clangs and thumps with eerie lapsteel twang. It's the kind of enthralling track that makes me admire the creativity of certain songwriters.
"Desperately", "Angeline", and "Let Me Run" soften the tone, with the exception of the occasional soaring vocal outburst. "Long Way Home" has a jauntier bluegrass feel to it, while "The Other Dame" grinds a bit of blues and shows off the grittier side of Romi's voice. And the finale "Bible" balks at religious myopia.
