Richard Julian: Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes

Richard Julian's Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes was released last week. It's a laidback collection of bluesy folk that I think will appeal to fans of Peter Mulvey or Lyle Lovett. Julian was formerly the frontman of The Little Willies, and has played with Bonnie Raitt, Sasha Dobson, Jesse Harris, and Norah Jones.

The albums has quiet, world weary blues tempered with moments of levity in "World Keeps On" and "Can't Go Back". "A Thousand Days" yields to solemnity as it mingles personal conflicts with the aftermath of an "infamous flood". "Man In The Hole" is a lyrical fable of a man who forsakes everyone and everything - including the woman who loves him - in an obsessive search for treasure.

Then there are jauntier numbers like "If You Stay" and "Syndicated", which addresses the spread of American culture. And the mellow "God III" is sung from the perspective of the imaginary, misfit son of Jesus.

"Spring Is Just Around The Corner" is my favorite song on the disc. The tune mirrors the wry humor of Mulvey and Lovett, as Julian's rich voice layers cheery lyrics over a jazzy arrangement.
